Yio Chu Kang Swimming Complex: Worth the Trip from Punggol?

By Alvin, SSI Swimming Instructor Trainer, published with Swim2u Swim School · Updated · How we write our guides

Punggol Swimming Complex isn't open yet, so Punggol families sometimes ask about other public pools. Yio Chu Kang Swimming Complex in Ang Mo Kio is one option. For most Punggol homes it isn't the nearest pool, so here's when it is worth the trip and when it isn't.

The short answer

For most Punggol families, a pool closer to home, or a condo pool where external coaches are allowed, will be easier for weekly lessons. Yio Chu Kang Swimming Complex is worth considering if it is already on your route, for example near a child's school, a grandparent's home or your workplace in the Ang Mo Kio or Yio Chu Kang area.

What Yio Chu Kang Swimming Complex has

Yio Chu Kang Swimming Complex is an ActiveSG pool at 202 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 9, Singapore 569771 (facility phone 6481 9054). ActiveSG lists a competition pool, a teaching pool and a wading pool, and classes it as a Normal pool, so there are no slides or other special water features.

It is open 8am to 9:30pm daily except Thursday, when it closes for maintenance (if Thursday is a public holiday, it opens 8am to 9:30pm). The competition pool also opens early, 6:30am to 8am, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Public hours don't guarantee every pool or lane is open, so check ActiveSG on the day.

Entry fees

At ActiveSG Normal pools, Singapore Citizen and PR adults (18 to 54) pay $1.00 on weekdays and $1.30 on weekends and public holidays. Children under 18 and seniors 55 and above pay $0.50 and $0.60. Pool entry is separate from any lesson fee. Rates can change, so confirm on ActiveSG before you go.

Getting there from Punggol

The nearest MRT station is Yio Chu Kang (NS15) on the North-South Line, while Punggol is on the North East Line, so most trips involve a change or a bus. Travel time depends on where in Punggol you start, so check a live journey planner for your own route before committing to a weekly class.

When the extra travel makes sense

It can make sense when the lesson slot fits around something you already do in that area, when a learner wants an early weekday swim in the competition pool, or when an older child is preparing for SwimSafer and a particular schedule only works there. For young beginners, a short, predictable trip usually matters more than which pool it is: tired toddlers after a long journey rarely have a good lesson.
